Heat, light and beef liver capsules

Heat, light and beef liver capsules

Storing beef liver capsules comes down to three rules: cool, dry and dark. A kitchen cupboard away from the stove does the job, and the bathroom, the place most people actually keep them, is the single worst room in the house for it.

Storing beef liver capsules away from the bathroom

A bathroom cycles through humidity every time someone showers. Capsules absorb moisture through the shell, soften, and start to stick or clump, and the desiccant in the jar can only absorb so much before it gives up.

Heat does its share too, but humidity is the faster killer. A cupboard two rooms away at 22 degrees beats a shelf above the towel rail at 20 degrees with steam twice a day.

Does it need the fridge

Almost never. A fridge is cold but damp, and the temperature swings as the door opens and closes add condensation to a jar that was doing fine on a shelf.

If your home runs hot in summer and the label suggests a cool spot, a cupboard on the north side of the flat is the better answer before the fridge is.

Keep it labelled and sealed

Leave it in the original container rather than a pill organiser, because the original jar seals and the organiser doesn't. Every transfer into an open tray adds a week of air exposure per day of doses.

I decanted a week's worth into a travel case once and the last 2 capsules were noticeably softer than the first 2. It was a small thing, and it was the whole lesson in one jar.

How to tell if it has degraded

Look for clumping, a colour shift, or an off smell. Liver powder has its own character, so you're looking for a change rather than a perfect smell, and a change you notice without trying is the signal to replace it.

At around $0.28 a day, a pack lost to storage costs about $8. That's a cheap mistake once, and an expensive one every quarter.

The setup that works

A sealed jar in a cool, dry, dark cupboard, with the desiccant left in and the lid closed promptly. That's the entire method, and it fits in one sentence because it is one.

Move it out of the bathroom tonight and you've solved the biggest risk in the room you weren't watching.

How long a pack realistically keeps

Most beef liver capsules carry a 18 to 24 month best before date from manufacture, and that assumes the jar stays sealed and dry. Store it well and you'll use the pack long before the date. Store it badly and the date stops protecting you.

At 1 capsule a day a 120 count pack lasts 4 months, which is well inside any of those windows. The date isn't usually the problem. The cupboard is.

Write the open date on the lid and you'll never have to guess how long the jar has been sitting there.

Travel and the original container

On a trip, keep the capsules in the labelled jar rather than a loose bag. A jar seals and a bag doesn't, and a humid hotel room does the same work as a steamy bathroom over a week.

If space is tight, take only the days you need plus 3, and leave the rest at home rather than transferring them into something that won't protect them.

Same 3 rules on the road as at home. Cool, dry, dark, and a lid that actually closes.
