In a one-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 65 Los Angeles–area firefighters took four tablets a day, each supplying 300 mg aged garlic extract and 30 mg coenzyme Q10. Against placebo, pulse-wave velocity — the standard measure of how stiff arteries have become — fell by 1.21 m/s over 12 months (P = 0.005), and the index of endothelial function measured by digital thermal monitoring rose by 31.3 (P = 0.01).
